When we think about the biggest advancements today, it’s hard to ignore the role coding plays. AI is transforming industries, from healthcare to entertainment, and even finance. Examples include automating tasks, predicting trends, and solving complex problems. Big data, the massive volume of information generated daily, depends on coding to process, analyze, and interpret data, enabling businesses to make smarter decisions and doctors to deliver accurate and rapid diagnoses.
For example, AI is helping doctors diagnose diseases more accurately, sometimes even before symptoms show up, while big data can help predict weather patterns or track global health trends. These are just a few real scenarios where coding is making a huge impact. Coding connects these technologies to real solutions that benefit people’s lives, businesses, and even the planet.
Why Children Should Learn Coding
So, why is it important for children to learn coding now? Coding doesn’t just teach kids how to write computer programs but teaches them how to think. Learning to code encourages logical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills that are useful in all areas of life, including other subjects like math and natural sciences. Coding also helps children develop cognitive skills, improve their memory, and strengthen their ability to break down complex problems into smaller, manageable tasks, in Computer science, this is called decomposition and is part of the IGCSE Computer Science syllabus.

Platforms like SoloLearn or Programiz provide interactive lessons that are engaging and easy to follow, becoming more challenging as you progress. There are also countless online resources, tutorials, and coding challenges that students can use to practice and build their skills. The more they code, the better they’ll get.
Coding is also closely linked to other subjects, particularly math. When children learn to code, they improve their mathematical thinking and memory, as coding often involves working with numbers, logic, and algorithms. This makes coding a key part of a balanced education.

As AI, big data, and other tech-based fields continue to evolve, coding will be key to addressing some of the world’s biggest challenges. For example, in healthcare, AI can analyze medical data faster than ever, helping doctors detect illnesses like cancer or heart disease at earlier stages, when treatment is more effective. Big data is also playing a role in predicting pandemics, improving patient care, and even developing new treatments.
In the fields of chemistry, biotechnology and physics, coding is used to model molecular structures or simulate complex experiments, speeding up research and making discoveries more efficient. It’s not just about coding for the sake of technology, it’s about using that technology to make our world better and healthier, taking responsibility for our future rather than holding onto blind optimism, and putting our trust in the tools we've created to drive real change.

They both have the same qualifications, but one has coding experience. Which candidate do you think the employer would most likely choose? The one with coding skills, of course. In a world where tech is increasingly integrated into every aspect of life and business, coding experience is becoming an incredibly valuable asset.
The reality is, AI and tech are going to be part of every job and every field. Employers are looking for candidates who understand how to use and create technology, not just those who can use it. Learning to code gives children a chance to be ahead of the curve, offering them more career opportunities and the chance to be part of the innovations that will shape the future.
Computing at RBIS
At RBIS, we follow the International Cambridge syllabus for KS4 and KS5, ensuring students receive a solid education in computer science. From Key Stage 3 (Year 7), students are introduced to a range of software and technologies across different fields.
Students explore game development with Scratch, Roblox Studio, and Unity, using Lua in Roblox Studio and C# in Unity. This fosters creativity through world-building while practicing coding in popular high-level languages. Learning to code through game development makes the process more engaging and allows students to see the immediate results of their work, boosting both creativity and problem-solving skills.
Students also gain experience in 2D animation with Pivot Animator, video editing with Adobe Premiere, and 3D modeling or computer-aided design with TinkerCAD as well as UI/UX and graphic design skills with Adobe Photoshop. Finally, as they prepare for their IGCSE and A-level exams, students mainly focus on Python programming, laying a solid foundation for those who want to pursue computer science.
Our aim is to provide a well-rounded experience, preparing students to specialize in a specific field at university. Along with coding, students learn about logic circuits, SQL for databases, and binary, denary, and hexadecimal calculations, linking these to both logic and mathematics. These concepts also connect to computer science theory, which includes hardware, software, and cyber security, an ever-growing field. Our curriculum equips students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, setting them up for success in academics and the tech world.
