As an art teacher, over the years, I have watched students walk into the art room carrying all kinds of energy, some a little unsure, some quiet and thoughtful, and others simply tired after a full day of learning. And yet, time and time again, I have watched those same students begin to open up, slow down, and find something they did not know they were looking for.
Art is not just another subject on the timetable. It is not about drawing “nice pictures” or creating perfect portraits. It is about thinking differently, feeling deeply, and discovering your voice in a way that no other subject allows.
We often forget that art was our original language. Long before words, we told our stories through drawings on cave walls, images that date back over 40,000 years. These were not just pictures, they were messages, histories and emotions. They were evidence of who we were and how we lived. That legacy continues today. Every time a student picks up a pencil or a paintbrush, they are doing more than making marks on paper; they are exploring their own identity, their thoughts, and their emotions.

What is truly special about art is that it offers a freedom that students do not get elsewhere. Art encourages students to reflect, experiment, fail, and try again. It fosters emotional literacy, resilience, and self-awareness. It gives students a safe space where they can be honest and authentic. And yet, as students move through secondary school, art becomes optional. Fewer choose it at higher levels, not because they do not enjoy it, but because they do not always see where it can lead. What many do not realise is that the skills developed through art are not limited to just the creative industry, they are vital across a huge range of careers. Even in fields like marketing, psychology, education, and tech, the ability to think creatively, interpret visual information, solve complex problems, and connect with human emotion, art skills give students a powerful advantage.
Art teaches critical thinking, innovation, empathy, and the ability to see beyond the obvious. Art is not just about creating, it is about seeing. It is about questioning the world around us, interpreting meaning, and developing empathy. It teaches students to value perspective, to understand that different people can look at the same thing and see something entirely different. No other subject offers that.
Photography, for example, another art form, is powerful in a different way. A photograph freezes a moment in time, capturing an emotion or a story the photographer wants you to feel. But traditional visual art? It invites the viewer to become the storyteller. That kind of emotional engagement, of shared ownership, is rare.
In today’s digital world, where attention spans are shrinking and screens are constantly competing for our focus, art is more essential than ever. It slows students down. It demands presence. It gives them time to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with themselves. I have seen students with little confidence come alive through art. I have seen it ground them, inspire them and change them.
So to every student wondering if art is “worth it”: Yes. A thousand times, yes.
Art is not just a subject. It is a way of thinking, a way of being and the world needs more of it.
