Key Stage 4

Key Stage 4 consists of Years 10 and 11, during which time students follow the International General Certificate in Secondary Education (IGCSE) and some GCSE courses. IGCSEs are a worldwide version of the compulsory school examination in the UK. These courses last two years, and include internal and externally assessed assignments. (I)GCSE results are used to support university and college applications. During these years we aim to build on the skills developed at Key Stage 3 during which the students followed the British National Curriculum.

Key Stage 4 is an important time for students as they embark on the first steps of external examinations which will help determine their future careers. They begin the IGCSE (the International General Certificate of Secondary Education) courses of study, a two year programme, which starts in Year 10 and culminates in globally recognised qualifications at the end of Year 11. These qualifications are important prerequisites as students make the transition to Key Stage 5, where they will study Advanced Level A’ Level) subjects involving internal and externally assessed assignments.All students follow the compulsory ‘core’ curriculum, which includes Mathematics, Double Award Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics) English Language, ICT and Physical Education (PE). Students then choose at least 3 ‘optional’ subjects, which must include one language (Thai, Chinese or French) one humanity (Business Studies, Geography or History) and two further subjects, which may include an additional language or humanity subject, or Music, Art and Design. These subjects are taught by specialist teachers, and form an excellent basis for then choosing three/four subjects for A’ Levels at Key Stage 5. All of our students are assigned to a House throughout their time at RBIS. There are four Houses: Dragon, Lion, Phoenix and Unicorn. Each student will tell you that their house better than the others. This forms the basis of our personalised guidance and welfare system for every student. Every individual is part of a Form Group, led by a Form Teacher who sees them every day. The Form Teacher is the first point of contact in the crucial relationship between home and school.

About me

I graduated from Keele University, UK, with a degree in Biology and Mathematics and then continued on to study towards my PGCE. After graduating I worked at a school in the UK teaching Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This gave me an opportunity to teach a wide range of scientific topics at different levels.

Why you I like to work at RBIS 

Since working at RBIS, I have had the opportunity to develop my Physics and Mathematics teaching to students at iGCSE and A-Level. Students at RBIS are so polite and hardworking and they are a pleasure to teach.


More about Mr Brougham

" As some of you may know, I am a keen sportsman. As a student at school and university I competed for many teams in Fencing, Badminton, Atheltics and Squash. Fencing however, is my primary sport. I have been fortunate enough to compete for the Great Britain U17, U20, Student and Senior teams at international tournaments around the world. Fencing taught me a lot growing up, it taught me how to win graciously, lose with dignity and most of all, how to work hard towards a goal. Whilst at RBIS, I am excited to be able to help students achieve their goals both inside and outside of school."
