One Year IGCSE

RBIS is the only international school in Bangkok to offer a tailored one year IGCSE course. This is designed for students who would like to retake their IGCSEs or have moved overseas or from another school part way through their course.

The one year course is a bespoke programme that is designed to enable students to move on to the next educational step in sixth form, without having to repeat the whole two-year IGCSE course.

Everyone has a different experience and a personal journey in education, and some circumstances mean that a student may not have been able to achieve the 5 IGCSE’s needed to move on to the next step. Many students have to relocate during unfortunate times in their education: at the end of year 10; others move schools for reasons out of their control.

What Subjects do students Study?

Students completing the one year IGCSE course study a bespoke course of subjects that will depend on their past school life. However, it is advisable to always have IGCSEs in English and mathematics, along with a science subject. Thai nationals are also required to complete the Thai first language IGCSE. Outside of these subjects students are able to study subject options such as ICT, Business Studies, Geography, History, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mandarin, French, Art and Design, Photography and World Literature.

Who is eligible?

Any student who is moving at the end of year 10 from another school is eligible to take the one year IGCSE course. Most schools will make pupils retake year 10, but at RBIS you can continue to year 11. Students starting year 10 cannot take the one year IGCSE course, as it has been designed for age appropriate students who have already undertaken a significant portion of GCSE curriculum time.

Can I take a new subject during a one year course?

It entirely depends on your skills, talents and interests. It is never advisable to take on a new subject like Mandarin or Physics in a single year if you have no previous knowledge of the subject. However, many students have been successful in completing a variety of IGCSEs that they have never studied, from Geography to Photography, and achieve excellent passing grades.

GCSE Retake programme

Every year in Bangkok, and the world over, some GCSE students were unable to achieve those 5 A*-C grades needed at the end of year 11. Our one year IGCSE programme of study is designed to meet the needs of students in these positions, and unlike other international schools, we will not force students to redo year 10 if we can help it.

Who is eligible?

Any student who has already sat their IGCSEs and did not achieve the grades they needed to move on with their studies. It may be that you were unable to achieve any or some of the 5 IGCSE grades needed for sixth form study At RBIS we put together a skeleton study programme to help these students get the grades in the subjects they require.
