Chinese teaching in RBIS
RBIS adopts the similar Chinese Language curriculum used in BeiJing Language and Cultural Institute. Our Chinese Curriculum aims to develop students’ competencies in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. All students will start learning Chinese from Year 1.
Students in Year 1 and Year 2 will be learning Chinese at the foundation level. We focus on listening and PINYIN (the pronunciations) by having lots of Chinese activities --- singing, dancing, colouring, games and story-telling. Children of this age are sensitive to languages, the more input, the more absorption.
Year 3 and year 4We learn conversation and sometimes we write basic Chinese strokes to build a character foundation. To increase the interest of students, we start with simple pictographs. During Chinese lessons, the students not only see how pictures evolved into Chinese characters, but they also get to know the history of Chinese characters. In this period, the most important study is reading. Interest is the best teacher. To keep their interest in Chinese, we do not practice writing much, because the Chinese characters are quite strange and difficult to students, but we read a lot of picture books to let the students get to know more Chinese characters and when they ascend to a higher grade, they have a familiar feeling with them and will not refuse more in-depth study.
Year 5 and Year 6 , according to the scientific learning process, listening, speaking, reading and writing should be taken step by step. Now it’s the period of writing. Students have activity books and handwriting books. They start writing from the characters we learnt before, because they can say them and they can read them, so the characters are not so difficult to them anymore.
In secondary Years 7, 8 and 9. Students have two and half hours in Chinese learning which focus on reading and writing. We are adapting curriculum content to meet students’ abilities, and using diversified teaching strategies to facilitate and improve students learning. The students should do lots of classwork to remember the Chinese characters. After handling enough vocabulary they could make sentences easily, write essays and communicate with people in Chinese language. When students enter Year 10, they can choose the Chinese IGCSE as an option. Now in RBIS Chinese IGCSE classes, we are setting progressive learning targets to develop more sophisticated level of Chinese to support students in achieving their expected learning outcomes for them to succeed in their final IGCSE exams.
At the end of the students’ primary & secondary education, students will be able to:
(1) Listen to a variety of spoken texts and demonstrate an understanding of the content at the literal and inferential levels.
(2) Express oneself clearly with confidence and fluency.
(3) Read with good pronunciation and clear articulation.
(4) Write legibly, coherently and cohesively.
